LUST FOR LIBRARIES

6/7/2015

What's the collective noun for a group of writers? A thesaurus of writers? A neurosis of authors? A castle-in-the-sky of scribblers? Whatever it is, this weekend a wonderful bunch of imaginative dreamers will descend on sunny Brighton for Brighton Rocks Books, a full day of events for kids and teens and adults with taste, to celebrate the opening of the Jubilee Library's Summer Reading Challenge. And it's all free!

IT'S GOING TO BE SO GOOD GUYS, DON'T MISS IT!

When Nikki Sheehan, Lisa Heathfield and I first thought of putting together the event, our first choice of location was a library, and I'm so pleased the lovely people at the Jubilee Library agreed to host us.

I love libraries so much I put one in my book. Admittedly the one in The D'Evil Diaries is the Tower of Babel in Hell, and has a tiny problem with inkbats, booksnakes and bottomless abysses, but I love it all the same because BOOKS. Libraries are gateways to an almost infinite number of worlds, and that makes them magical, wherever they are. Yes, bookshops have that too, but libraries have the added bonus of being FREE, having librarians to help you with your choices and searches and a million other things, and being a community centre like no other - you only have to look at the amazing way the library in Ferguson stayed open to help their community over the last year.

So to celebrate Brighton Rocks Books and the wonderful librarians who are helping us put on the event (THANK YOU Lucy Castle, Vicky Tremain and everyone else!), here are some of our authors on their favourite thing about libraries:

AF Harrold: My favourite thing about libraries is that book there. No, not that one, that one. Or this one. And that one. Or… Oh, hang on moment. That one there. No, just along… Up a shelf… And along… Not the red spine, the blue… Yes, that one.

Jenny McLachlan: My favourite thing about libraries is that all the books are FREE!

Nikki Sheehan: My favourite thing about libraries is the smell. Gorgeous aromatic words wafting from the pages, promising adventures, love, tragedy and hours and hours of low-sugar, calorie-free entertainment. Delicious!

Eve Ainsworth: My favourite things about libraries is they are the gateway to an assortment of new worlds and wonders.

Sarah Sky: My favourite thing about libraries is losing myself in the aisles and discovering new books I never set out to borrow.

Jess Valance: My favourite thing about libraries is that they give you the chance to try something you wouldn’t necessarily buy. You might hate it, but you might discover something amazing.

Lisa Heathfield: My favourite thing about libraries is the silence, the words, the smell of books, the magic...

Julia Lee:  My favourite thing about libraries is that you NEVER run out of books to read.

And because no post on libraries is complete without a mention of my favourite fictional librarian, here's Giles :)
